With a history and tradition that spans more than 110 years, St Mary's is proud to have played a pivotal part in the lives of many remarkable women. We have given them the confidence, courage and character to contribute to a better world.
They have gone on to make a positive impact in all walks of life – innovative architects, committed doctors, dedicated moms, passionate teachers, exceptional engineers, incredible artists, brilliant businesswomen and amazing athletes. Our Old Girls' community provides these remarkable women with a collective support group that extends to all corners of the globe.
Despite only having modelled for a short time, Alex has walked runways around the world for fashion houses such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Jean Paul Gaultier. Scouted at 18, Alex first finished her degree in Dramatic Arts, Film Production, Media and Writing in Cape Town. She is hotly tipped to become one of the most notable names in fashion.
Anaesthetist, and volunteer with Operation Smile - With a passion for paediatric anaesthesia, and a commitment to giving hope and care to children and adults across Africa, Alexander is a remarkable woman.
Alison studied BSocSci Nursing, graduating top of class in 1987, three years later then graduating with a Hons Degree in Labour Law and HR. In 92 she began working at Southern Sun (now Tsogo Sun) and 24 years later this devoted Mom of three continues to consult for the Group and assists her husband, David with all aspects of his Pharmacy practice.
Mom of two, doctor, owner of Femina Health, founder of Cycling for Mobility, treasurer and helicopter doctor for the Mountain Club of South Africa – inspiring others with her ambition and drive, Beth has had a profound impact on women’s health.
Coach, motivational speaker, lecturer, wife and mother of one - Caitlyn is passionate about helping women and girls to feel comfortable in their own skins and giving them the tools to create lives that make them come alive.
Wife and mother of two, doctor, aid-worker, fundraiser and director of Solihull Christian Fellowship - Delyce's strong faith, passion for her family, and commitment to primary health care are evidence of a remarkable woman who is dedicated to making a difference.
Dr Mary Lane (1990) is a Consultant Paediatric and Congenital Cardiothoracic Anaesthetist in the UK. She received the St Mary’s International Old Girls' Award for 2016 for her work in medicine. Of her many accomplishments, Mary has helped develop an innovative programme to improve Patient Safety as well as develop the professional workforce.
Paediatric Radiologist, wife and mother of one. Jacqueline graduated from Stellenbosch University in 2002, and built upon that success by qualifying as a specialist diagnostic radiologist in 2012. She completed a paediatric imaging fellowship at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital before relocating to the UK where she works as a Paediatric Radiologist.
Trained at Prue Leith’s School of Food & Wine in London. Karen returned to SA and established catering company, By Word of Mouth, in 1993. Karen’s company won the Best of Joburg Readers Choice awards for 17 consecutive years and the 2016 International Catersource Achievement in Catering Excellence award for catering in excess of $2 million.
Kate studied personal training and then a BA Psychology through Unisa. After four hip surgeries Kate made the SA Women’s Hockey squad in July 2016 and received her first Cap for SA in January 2017 at the Cape Town Summer Series vs China. Kate runs her own Hockey Academy for Grade 1-7 children and is a Prep Sport Co-ordinator at Maris Stella School.
Political leader, public speaker, writer, mentor, Harvard University graduate and a resident fellow at the Institute of Politics at Harvard University . Lindiwe was the first black woman in South African history to be elected Leader of the Opposition in Parliament. An Author-in-residence at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study in South Africa, and a fortnightly columnist for Business Day Newspaper.
Our National Old Girls' Award for 2016 goes to Lisa Engelbrecht (1983) in the Category of Music. Lisa is the Head Vocal Coach at UCT Opera School, performer as well as Guest Vocal Coach at the Royal College of Music, London. Lisa has expressed her gratitude at the exceptional education (including numerous plays, musicals and choir) she received at St Mary’s which, in many ways, played a part in her career
Freelance Food Stylist, developer, writer, and business owner. Lungile was a Top 5 finalist in MasterChef SA S1 and a contributing editor for Ginja Food Magazine. She now owns and runs Lungi's Corner, specializing in many aspects of food, dining and catering as well as function management.
Megan is an organisational development consultant, director and co-owner of OD consultancy Thoughtsmiths. She is thrilled to support organisations (both corporates and NPOs) to adapt and thrive in the changing demands of our time. Megan has a tent, 3 cats, a very patient husband, a little girl she absolutely adores, and another baby on the way.
Nicky studied BCom Tourism Management, then a BTech Interior Design. From second year she entered and placed in various design competitions. In 2016, she won the Public Value Student Design Award at the International iF Design Awards in Munich for her multi-functional furniture design for use in underprivileged schools. Nicky loves what she does.
In addition to her work for the International Committee of the Red Cross as Regional Legal Advisor, Sarah founded a NGO called Thrive that seeks to provide opportunities to young South Africans who have a desire for a tertiary education. The organisation offers selected students financial support and mentorship to enable them to succeed.
Plastic Surgeon, wife and mother of one. Susan graduated from UCT in 2002 and completed her internship at Prince Msheyeni Hospital. She then practiced general surgery before later specializing in plastic surgery. She belongs to Operation Smile, a Non-Profit Organisation that provides free surgeries to children with cleft lips and palates.
